Svetlana Alekseyovna Korolyuk

IRC Nickname: Holtzmann
Name: Svetlana Alekseyovna Korolyuk
Alias: none
Age: 17
Date of Birth: February 29th
Hometown: outskirts of St. Petersburg, Russia
Height: 5'5"
Weight: ---
Hair Color: silvery white (originally strawberry blonde)
Eye Color: white, ringed with black (originally light blue)
Nationality/Race: Russian-Ukrainian
Occupation: none
Personality Profile: generally friendly. When comfortable with a situation Svetlana was expansive and outgoing, often talking more than strictly necessary. When not at ease, however, she politely kept to herself. After her "death", she took on a more forward and mischievous attitude which, when mixed with the typical Russian dark humor, will often result in her trying to pull scary pranks. As opposed to her culturally well-informed and well-educated brother, Svetlana never paid much attention to the world outside her farm and lacks in both knowledge of the world and sophistication.
Physical Description: when seen in her original form (only possible through psychic methods), Svetlana appears as a floating young woman with chalk-white skin, white hair and eyes. There is a bullet hole in her forehead, with a trickle of blood running down her face. The back of her skull seems to be missing, and is rather disconcerting to look at, as one can see her face from behind as if it was a mask. Her hands and feet look semi-transparent.
Most of the time she'll be seen inhabiting an effigy of about her size, fully wrapped in veils and wearing silk gloves.
Character Picture (Optional):
---------------------------------
Mutation/Powers:
Primary : Psychic Projection - Svetlana is able to psychically send her mind out of her body in the form of a faint psychic presence bearing her physical appearance. Her psychic form may only be detected by psychics with the right discipline or by machines specifically designed to detect psychic entities. For most effects, she can be treated like a ghost while out of her body: completely immaterial and invisible. She can be affected by technological means, but religious or otherwise superstition-based methods have no effect on her. Powers that affect immaterial objects will also affect her psychic body, but any damaged parts are very quickly and effortlessly reformed.
Svetlana's psychic body may fly at up to 60 miles per hour. In this form, she may communicate psychically with other people, sending images, sensations and sounds directly into her mind. Weakened minds may even be possessed, in which case Svetlana simply takes control over the body until the struggle against the body's original psyche eventually tosses her out again. She cannot possess non-living beings or creatures without a complex nervous system, but she can "wear" her brother's effigies as if they were her own body, and they serve as effective receptacles to her mind, where she can rest and regain energy without being cast out. Svetlana may stay in this form for up to three days, slowly weakening in the process if she's not incorporated into a body.
Secondary : Poltergeist - while in psychic form, Svetlana is able to perform small cantrips that affect the physical world. Pulling or pushing objects, changing electric currents or local temperatures, creating magnetic fields, making machines malfunction in peculiar ways, creating noises without an apparent source, scrawling on walls, breaking/fixing/creating/teleporting small items of little value… Svetlana's repository of tricks is actually rather extensive, and she can reproduce nearly any effects stereotypical ghosts or apparitions are supposed to be able to generate. The effects are always minor, and generally not too spectacular. They will also never cause serious or permanent physical damage to anyone involved, even if she does intend to do harm. Flying knives will always miss, fires will always extinguish themselves, etcetera.
This power to affect the physical world does not work if Svetlana is currently inhabiting a body, human, animal, Effigy or any other.
Tertiary : none
Drawbacks/Weaknesses/Side Effects :
- Given Svetlana's actual body is dead, staying in psychic form for extended periods of time will lead her to slowly losing power and eventually disappearing.
- The only way she can regain energy spent in her psychic form is by spending time within a brain-dead living body (or Effigy). Possessing conscious humans or animals halts the energy bleed off, but does not allow her to recover lost power.
- Her possessions are always extremely uncomfortable and draining to their targets, but temporary. Possessing unconscious individuals will not wake them up, but it will cause them horrible nightmares they cannot wake up from while she is in control.
- Svetlana only knows Russian and is unable to understand other spoken or written languages by herself. She is able to understand languages her current body understands, but not speak or write in them. Anatoly's Effigies understand any languages he himself is fluent in, but are unable to speak. Even if returned to her original body, the mental trauma of her "death" has left Svetlana completely mute and anything she writes comes out as disjointed text. The only person who can understand her at all times is Anatoly.
- Svetlana's psychic form reacts adversely to fields that disable mutant powers. Maybe it's a defense mechanism, but she cannot enter such a field, feeling a solid barrier at the field's boundary. Likewise, being inside a field while it's created will toss her away from it (and quite likely her body) at high speeds.
How do you believe this character's powers will further develop in the future? They won't. Besides learning how to spook people out more effectively with her poltergeist, she is completely unable to develop new mutations. Any increase in power will only happen very slowly, compensating for the fact she is now effectively immortal as long as she can possess something.
Background:
Daughter of Ukrainian parents who had been relocated to Russia during the Soviet regime, Svetlana Alekseyovna Korolyuk was born in the first few years after the fall of the Soviet Union. Her family lived in a tiny rural town in the outskirts of St. Petersburg, but their Ukrainian heritage was not very well-met by the somewhat xenophobic villagers. For most of her early life, Svetlana and his two siblings had only each other to play with.
Svetlana was the elder child by a year, bright and sociable. While her brother Anatoly turned to computers for amusement and her younger bother Yosif spent more time learning how to work in the farm with their father, she was the one who helped their mother at home after school. Most of her free time was spent in town, attending social functions, selling the family's produce or simply talking to her friends and flirting with the local boys. It was a fairly calm life.
One day, however, the family farm was attacked by bandits, intent on stealing the money his family had earned from that summer's wheat harvest. Her father, Alekseyev, reacted. In the struggle, one of the bandits was also killed, and the others, enraged, started executing her family. Her father first, then her mother, her grandmother, her uncle, her younger brother, then Svetlana herself. She closed her eyes as she saw the barrel of the gun pointed towards her head, and everything went black.
Quirks, Extras, Random Character Facts:
- Svetlana now lives as her brother's bodyguard and aide, inhabiting his effigies. Technically speaking, she is still alive, and she considers herself lucky for that.
- On the other hand, she hates possessing people, as the harrowing mental struggle for control leaves her drained.
- Effigies only have sight and hearing, as well as very weak tactile detection. Svetlana misses her senses of smell, taste and touch very badly, and she sometimes possesses small animals to be able to enjoy a good meal or to be caressed.
