Kim Seong-Smith

Post by Holtzmann »

IRC Nickname: Holtzmann

Name: Kim Seong Smith (Korean: Seong Kim)
Age: 18
Date of Birth: February 15th, 1993
Hometown: a rural town near Helena, Montana

Height: 11'10" (3.60m)
Weight: 628lbs (285kg)
Hair Color: Black with red bangs
Eye Color: Blue
Nationality/Race: Korean-American

Occupation: Liberal arts student, occasional model

Personality Profile: Kim is outgoing and handles her condition with pragmatism and good humor. She's a bit of tomboy in her tastes, having grown up in an army household with computer games, sports and farms all around her. Otherwise, Kim is a "normal" girl for her age, often frustrated by the fact that dating is usually out of the question for her. She's also somewhat sheltered, sometimes getting freaked out by people with "alternative" lifestyles.

While Kim suffers with academic subjects, she's a skilled artisan, having learned tailoring, leatherworking and even a bit of blacksmithing in an effort not to spend so much money in custom-made clothing and accessories, and also as a way to pass the time. She's competent in Aikido and Taewkondo, but hasn't practiced ever since she was 14, due to a lack of sparring partners her size.

Physical Description: discounting her size, Kim looks perfectly average. She's proportioned as a normal 5'10" person, meaning all her body parts are twice as big as a normal person's. Her build is average, if a little on the muscular side, something she inherited from her father. Her face is stereotypically asian, with pale red lips, almond-shaped eyes and thin features. Her hair is lustrous black and very long, usually kept in a bun, ponytail or a thick braid folded upon itself, rarely let fully loose.

Given her clothes must be tailored to her enormous size, Kim has very little in terms of variety in her wardrobe, most of the articles either made by herself or given to her by her "sponsors". She's usually seen wearing jeans, button-up shirts and a variety of leather and metal accessories. Given shoes for her size are either too uncomfortable or get destroyed too quickly, she usually walks around barefoot, trusting the thick soles of her feet; sometimes wearing socks with rubberized soles.

Mutation/Powers:

Primary : Size - simply put, Kim is big and she's still growing. While her growth spurt seems to be over already, she's consistently gaining about an inch every year. Somehow, her body is able to cope with its size, avoiding all the common diseases very tall people tend to develop, as well as giving her somewhat disproportionate strength and toughness. At the moment, she's about twice as big, four times as heavy and eight times stronger than an average person. This power is completely inherent to her, wearing an SND will not make her weaker or smaller, but prolonged use will cause her to start developing debilitating (but mostly reversible) muscle and bone damage.

Secondary : none yet.

Tertiary : none yet.

Drawbacks/Weaknesses/Side Effects : Kim's size is at the same time her greatest asset and biggest flaw. She requires special housing, clothing and she eats about four times more than a 6'-tall human. While she does heal tissue damage about four times as fast as humans (in keeping with her surface area), she still requires medical attention when injured and has no special protection against chemicals or disease except for requiring a larger concentration of toxin/bacteria/virus before developing symptoms.

How do you believe this character's powers will further develop in the future?
Kim is big. She might get bigger, but probably not much more so. Her mutation is remarkably stable.

Background:
Kim is the child of Andrew Smith, an U.S. Army serviceman who was stationed in Korea in the late 80s, and Seong Yu-Na, a South Korean musician. Against regulations, Kim's parents started dating in South Korea, then moved together to the US as her Andrew's tour of duty ended and he was honorably discharged and retired after a training accident left him with a bad knee. The couple got married and moved to Montana, Andrew's native state.

The second child in that marriage was Kim, younger than her brother Stephen by three years. She grew up as a reasonably smart and popular child, more fond of sports than school. It was only by the time she was 14 that her mutation started manifesting itself. In just a few months, she grew from 5'4" to 6'6" and started drawing attention. The next three years included an amazing growth spurt, visits to and from many highly respected doctors, slightly less respected news crews, and a wide range of weirdos, from supporters to mutant haters.

There was no small amount of angst as the teenaged Kim grew up to a vertiginous height. Thankfully for the girl, her family and the community were both supportive. After all, she wasn't breathing fire or shooting lightning at people. She was just… big. And she helped the people in the farms around her house after school. There was a certain amount of anti-mutant hatred, and even one or two death threats from armed people with nothing better to do, but nothing Kim couldn't deal with or evade.

Donations from clothing companies were usually enough to keep Kim clothed, and the farms around helped keep the grocery bill low. Eventually, however… Kim graduated from high school (no honors, she almost didn't make it), and needed to either find a job or get herself a degree. Clearly, the local higher learning institution wouldn't be appropriate for a girl with her specific needs, and doing manual labor in their neighbor's farm forever wouldn't do either. It was only after much deliberation (and not a small amount of fear) that her parents decided to take her to Cobalt Academy.

Quirks, Extras, Random Character Facts:
- This is a Korean girl. She will kick your ass in Starcraft and kekeke about it afterwards.
- Kim takes up occasional modeling jobs for clothing companies in exchange for custom made clothes for herself.
- She is fully used to sitting on the floor and leaning down to avoid hitting her head on things. To avoid any back injuries, she sits up perfectly straight.
- Since Kim's proportions are perfectly normal, seeing her besides other people can make people with inner ear problems dizzy, since the perspective and distances around her look off.
